What's changed
The entire ESD website is prepared with prayer in mind - we want you to know what is going on here, who the workers are and what the needs are. Don't limit yourself to this page! Please browse the site and pray for the people in the photos.  Even as we prepare this, we are praying that God will guide you, our visitors, to pray for us!  Thank you!

2 February 2012
Pray for OUR STUDENTS!

  • Pray for the older students as they continue to learn academically and spiritually.  Pray for their hunger for God to deepen and their desire to live for Him to be a testimony to those in their homes and neighborhoods.
  • Pray for our younger students as they begin to learn that letters make words and words make sentences. Pray also for their spiritual understanding.
  • Pray for all students to stay academically and spiritually stimulated.
  • Pray for our students' families - many are hard hit by the economic times and are struggling to provide for their children. Pray that we may be able to assist as possible and that all needs will be met.
  • Pray for the activities we plan and for God's directions and protection.

Pray for OUR MINISTRY!

As others are being tested during this time of economic difficulty, our ministry is experiencing a drop in giving.  We praise God for some gifts that came over the holiday season and ask that you continue to pray that God will continue to provide to meet the needs of the ministry.

We have some specific events happening which you can pray for:
  1. Pray for health and stamina for all.
  2. Pray for our opportunities to share the ministry and God's goodness with others - through presentations in churches and to civic groups and organizations interested in learning sign language.
  3. Pray for those recent persons expressing an interest in joining the ESD team.  Pray for LB and CC and others whom God may be calling.  More workers among the Deaf in PR are greatly needed so that more can be reached for Christ. Pray for the laborers and willing hands needed to continue the work here and to expand as God brings new opportunities.
  4. Pray for Deaf children in the mountains of Puerto Rico and their need to learn about Christ's love - pray for workers and resources to visit their public school classrooms and establish communication with the teachers, parents and others who would be helpful in establishing online conversations or weekend outreaches for the Deaf.

Pray for WORK TEAMS as ESD does not currently have a maintenance person, our projects are done by work teams.  We are so thankful for the teams who have come this year to help us and those planning to come.
  • Is your group interested?  See our planning page and documents.  We would love to have you visit.

  • March 2012 - teen group from Ontario, Canada
  • April 2012 -
  • May 2012 - work group from Hanover PA to end the school year
  • June 2012 - Camp Week! June 16 - 23 a group from the Dillsburg PA area will bring us some fun in the summer activities and a VBS-type program
  • July 2012 - A family from Manitoba is coming to do maintenance and grounds work and take care of things for a week while the staff enjoys holidays.
  • August 2012 - Kansas work team to help prep for the school year and bring Back from Vacation Bible School

  1. Pray for work team unity - within the team and also between the work team and the ESD team
  2. Pray for safety - as they travel here, travel on the island, serve and work around the school grounds
  3. Pray for growth and guidance - as the team members see God at work in a new place in new ways
  4. Pray for communication skills - as team members connect with various students and ESD workers
  5. Pray for God's glory to be served and praised as individuals work, take time for God, share in group and meditate in individual devotions
Pray for workers who have visited and the impact that God and ESD have had on their lives.  We have had some visitors from Columbus State Community College's interpreter training program.  A few of them have been interested in continuing their relationship with us.  Ask God for insight in how to use their skills with our students.  Pray for their interest in the Bible and God to grow so that they can make an eternal impact on the deaf people they may meet in their lives.

Pray for the ESD TEAM

We are thankful for each full-time missionary worker and the part-time volunteers God brings to us.  Please visit the ABOUT US section of this website and pray for each missionary (they also have their own newsletter page - see side menu!) and their sending church and their island church, each volunteer, each member of the ESD board,  our friends on the WMD board, and the things God would place on your heart regarding each one.

  • Pray for Jen Johnson, our early elementary teacher, as she creatively plans activities to stimulate language development in her young students. Pray for Jen as she ends her term of service at ESD this school year.  Pray for God's peace and joy to carry her on to her next place of service.

  • Pray for Elizabeth Emma as she teaches our two oldest students. The class may be small in number but it is complex in makeup. Pray also for Elizabeth's health and physical strength for the school year.

  • Pray for Judy More, our chapel leader and classroom #1 teacher, as she works with our "middle school" levels.  Judy is teaching levels 3 and 4 this year- lots of attention is required for each of the students involved and Judy has only 2 hands and 2 eyes.  Pray for her stamina and mental strength as she balances things.   Pray also for her visa situation - ending in May 2012.

  • Pray for Betsy Hoke our principal as she makes decisions in the office and classroom, deals with parent issues and student discipline. Pray for Betsy as she plays the piano for the choir in her church in Puerto Rico and for time to practice and prepare music for both the hearing people's voice choir and the handbell choir at the school.

  • Pray for Leo Salgado  as he interacts with the students and staff.  Pray for his learning about God and pray that he will allow God to speak to his heart.

Pray also for
  1. Unity for the various team members as we work and live and pray and serve together on a daily basis
  2. Clarity of thought and discernment in the classrooms and working with the students
  3. Insight into the students' minds as we help them to put their thoughts (problems, issues, traumas) into words
  4. Rest and peaceful sleep as the September humidity remains high and sleep is accompanied by sweat drenched sheets and the cacophony of fans.

Pray WITH us:
The staff meets every weekday morning at 7:15 a.m. for prayer during the school term.
We also meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. for prayer, planning and/or Bible study.

You may enjoy this 5 finger prayer reminder from an outside website.

The following website is included to remind us all to pray for those who are UNREACHED by the Gospel.  As you pray for the UNREACHED people, remember, there are DEAF people within each people group - these deaf folk are even harder to reach.
