From the San Juan side
Take Highway #3 towards Luquillo/Fajardo past the kiosks at Luquillo Beach, past McDonald's and Walgreen's. Take the first exit just past Walgreen's. At the bottom, turn RIGHT. Liberty Cablevision will be on your right. Drive on Road 992 - past the fire station, past a bakery, past a big church, past a large local hardware store. Take the LEFT FORK to go onto Road 991. Stay on this road past new housing developments, past a home for the elderly, past a cemetery.
TAKE THE LEFT FORK.
The road will bend to the left. Stay on the road. You will pass over a little stream on a small bridge. From the small bridge at the intersection where 983 meets 991 to ESD is ONE MILE.
Take the LEFT FORK at every
opportunity. Do not go to Sabana. You will see no more signs. Stay on road 983. You will go up a small hill, around some sharpish curves, past a little single building blue HeadStart program, past more trees, around another curve, past a small cluster of houses (Sector Union), past the Catholic church and a 7th Day Adventist church. ESD will be on your left. Proceed with caution so that no one nails you in the rear as you turn into the driveway. If the gate is closed, pull into the parking area on the right side of the road. Call your contact and ask them to open the gate.
From Fajardo
Take Highway #3 towards Luquillo. Go past the WalMart plaza. Go up the hill. Go down the hill. You will see CGS Equipment Rental on your left, nothing but trees on your right. Soon you will see Lolita's Mexican Food on your left and some houses on your right. This area is called Barrio Juan Martin. You are still on Road #3 but get into the right lane. There is an auto body shop, paint store and veterinarian office all on your right. There is an entrance on your right into a housing area - do NOT go there. Past that, there is an EXIT from road #3. GO THERE.
You may see green signs announcing BOQUERON, PITAHAYA. You may see signs announcing ECOLOGICAL PARK or NorthEast Ecological Corridor.
You cannot turn right. Please turn LEFT at the stop sign. Proceed to the next intersection where you may see a sign announcing 940. In front of you, you should see the entrance to the Hacienda Margarita development. TURN RIGHT onto 940. Follow this road carefully avoiding oncoming traffic. You will drive around several S curves, over a little bridge and then see some cement barriers indicating that you will make a sharp LEFT.
When you have made that LEFT, you will be on Road 983. The school on your right at KM 1.6. Drive gently. Past the trees, past the place where the road washed out in the last floods, over another little bridge into the little village of Pitahaya past the beekeeper's house, past the school, past the village store, past the tire man's shop (wave at Edgar!), past the local hardware store and the rolls of fencing and stacks of rebar, past the new basketball court, past the last house and the purple flowers, over yet another little bridge and onto a section of road that is tree canopied.
The school will be up the small hill and on your right. If the gate is closed, please call your contact person and ask them to open the gate. If you did not have an appointment, you may be disappointed. Call before you start out to make sure someone will be available to meet you!
